I am relatively new to the art of cake decorating. However, it’s something I’ve been interested in since I was a little girl and baked my first cup cake.

Since I picked up my fondant and icing board, I’ve discovered that sugarcraft is a creative outlet that has the power to delight people, not only when decorating cakes, but also the recipients. It’s a fun, exciting and challenging hobby that I find constantly stimulating and my head is full of cake ideas that are yet to come!

Like I said, I’m a newcomer to the world of cake decorating, so I took a few courses for beginners. These have been very helpful, but I’ve found that trial and error has worked for me the best. Nothing is more satisfying than sitting down and trying to recreate some of the cake details you saw on the internet or in a magazine. After I completed some basic sugar making courses, I went and bought myself a few Cake decorating books which has proven to be a huge inspiration to me. Not only in terms of exciting and stunning cake decoration, but also the techniques and tips the pros use to create their towering masterpieces.

If you’ve been thinking of taking up this wonderful and fulfilling hobby, here are four Cake decorating books That I’ve found helpful so far:

1. “Dream Cakes” by Colette Peters

This book comes out on top of the list, simply because of its “wow” factor. This is an imaginative collection of original, whimsical and artistically detailed cupcakes. While the book is geared more towards the skilled baker, it is a wonderful source of inspiration with its unusual color combinations and techniques. It is truly a feast for the eyes and something to aspire to.

2. “Cake Chic” from Peggy Porschen

Peggy’s cake work is contemporary, yet classic. With its surprising detail and sophisticated lines, this book showcases her smooth flair when making cakes like fashion outfits. A wide range of ideas and recipes ensures that there is something for everyone in this cake decorating book.

3. “The Complete Book of Fondant Cake Decoration” by Sylvia Cord

A good, straightforward book of cake decorating techniques is worth its weight in gold. This easy-to-use, uncomplicated book is perfect for beginners. Covering a wide range of techniques presented in project form, it is easy to follow and starts with a few basics that will be perfect for beginners.

4. “The Well Decorated Cake” by Tuba Jarrett

This book deserves a mention here. Miss Garrett offers easy to follow chapters with great directions that help build your confidence. I’ve been able to expand my skill base at a realistic pace with this book and the results have definitely been worth it!

Well, here you are, four books on cake decorating that I found very useful as I started my journey into this wonderful hobby.

I hope you find it as useful and fun as I do.

Since starting my sugarcraft lessons, I have found that nothing is more useful to me than these books. I would recommend, if you can, to take some basic classes in beginner techniques that will allow you to implement some of the slightly more advanced techniques outlined in these books above.

There is no substitute for practice, so even if you’re just starting out, grab a cake, some fondant, and let your imagination run wild!
